The Thanksgiving Betrayal: How My Son and His Wife Orchestrated My Heartbreak for a Record Player

Living with my son Andrew and his wife Kate felt unbearable. I had moved in due to a leg injury, but tension filled every day. Kate made it clear I wasn’t welcome, and Andrew kept his distance.

I tried to help—offering advice on cooking and chores—but my efforts only seemed to irritate them. Conversations grew colder, and I felt like an outsider in my own family.

Then everything changed with our neighbor, Mr. Davis. Once distant and unfriendly, he suddenly began inviting me to dinner. Though hesitant, I accepted.

To my surprise, he was kind and thoughtful. We bonded over music, shared stories, and even danced. For the first time in years, I felt seen and happy again.

I began spending more time with him, escaping the tension at home. What started as curiosity grew into something that felt genuine and comforting.

That illusion shattered on Thanksgiving. In the kitchen, I overheard him thanking Kate for a “deal.” She mentioned a gift and how his help made living with me easier.

I confronted them, and the truth came out. The relationship had been arranged to distract me and get me out of the house. My feelings had been used.

Heartbroken, I left. But when Mr. Davis followed, he admitted something unexpected—the plan had been fake, but his feelings were not. And in that moment, I had to decide what mattered more: the betrayal, or the truth that came after it.
