Couple makes heartbreaking confession after 100 people died at their wedding

A Wedding Turned to Ashes: Tragedy Strikes as Fire Erupts at Qaraqosh Celebration

Haneen and Revan had dreamed of their wedding as a once-in-a-lifetime celebration—surrounded by nearly 900 friends and family members in a grand banquet hall in Qaraqosh. But what began as the happiest night of their lives ended in unimaginable tragedy. As the couple danced, a sudden crackling noise overhead signaled disaster. Within seconds, the nylon ceiling burst into flames, sending sparks raining down on the crowd and triggering a stampede toward the exits.

Chaos unfolded in an instant. Guests screamed and stumbled, many becoming trapped as the fire spread with terrifying speed. Revan managed to pull Haneen to safety, but not before she suffered injuries during the frantic rush to escape.

Earlier that day, Revan’s father had expressed concerns about the use of indoor fireworks. Staff assured him the displays were safe and electric. But when the fire erupted, it became clear there was little in place to stop it—just a single fire extinguisher that proved useless in the face of the growing inferno. By 10:45 p.m., the composite ceiling panels—flammable and banned under safety regulations—had collapsed, plunging the hall into darkness and choking smoke.

Revan and Haneen escaped through a side door leading into the kitchen. But over 100 guests, including ten of Haneen’s relatives—her mother, her brother, and other loved ones—lost their lives. Her father survived, but with serious injuries. At least 150 others were wounded.

In the days that followed, Iraqi authorities arrested fourteen people connected to the event, including those responsible for igniting the fireworks. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani pledged strict consequences and announced a new wave of inspections for public venues. But for Haneen and Revan, no accountability can undo what was lost.

The couple has since left their hometown, unable to bear the memories. The once-joyful wedding hall now stands in ruins—a haunting reminder of lives cut short and a celebration that turned to sorrow.

Haneen, deeply traumatized, has not spoken publicly since that night in 2023. Revan has described their emotional state bluntly: “We’re alive, but we’re dead inside.”

Though they’ve begun rebuilding their lives in a new town, the shadow of that night follows them. The pain is deep, and the road to healing is long. But with time, and the support of those around them, there remains hope that joy may one day find its way back into their lives.
