Camp Mystic counselor Emma Foltz helps save 14 campers in Texas flood

The catastrophic flash flooding in Texas continues to leave a deep impact across the state, with the death toll now rising to 81. Among the areas most affected is Kerr County, where the Guadalupe River overflowed following intense rainfall. One of the hardest-hit sites was Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls, where at least 27 campers and counselors tragically lost their lives.

In the midst of the heartbreak, stories of courage and compassion are emerging. One such story is that of Emma Foltz, a camp counselor now being recognized for her heroic efforts in helping save 14 young campers during the flooding.

Camp Mystic issued a heartfelt statement expressing grief and support for those impacted:
“Our hearts are broken alongside our families that are enduring this unimaginable tragedy. We are praying for them constantly and remain in close contact with local authorities as search efforts continue.”

Governor Donald Trump has signed a major disaster declaration for Kerr County to assist with the ongoing emergency response and recovery efforts. Meanwhile, rescue operations remain active, as several individuals are still missing.

Survivor Shares a Harrowing Account

Amanda Sue Jones, who was camping in the area with her family, described the frightening speed of the rising floodwaters in an interview with CNN.

“It was just immeasurably fast,” she said. “Everything seemed fine, and then suddenly, the water started spilling past the riverbanks and into the grass. That’s when we knew it was time to leave. Within minutes, cabins were being washed away.”

Jones said the situation shifted quickly from calm to chaotic, adding, “It wasn’t just heavy rain—it felt like a wall of water came through.”

Emma Foltz Recognized for Saving Lives

Among the stories of strength and quick thinking, Emma Foltz is being praised by many for her actions during the flood. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry highlighted her bravery on social media, thanking her for evacuating 14 campers to safety.

“She played an instrumental role in helping evacuate 14 of her campers to safety,” Gov. Landry posted. “Please join me in thanking Emma for her hard work and bravery under immense pressure.”

Foltz, who was raised in Alexandria, Louisiana, is currently a senior at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston. She has worked as a counselor at Camp Mystic for the past three years.

Supporters from around the country have shared messages of thanks and encouragement, calling her a hero.

“Thank you for your quick thinking and for saving the children,” one comment read. “May God bless you and your family. You are an inspiration.”

Others echoed the sentiment, with messages like, “You saved 14 lives and showed immense courage in the face of unimaginable danger,” and, “Emma, you are a true hero.”

A Community United in Grief and Hope

As Texas continues to recover from the historic flooding, the state and nation mourn those lost and rally behind those who showed extraordinary courage. Search and rescue teams remain committed to finding the missing, and local communities are offering support through prayer, donations, and volunteer efforts.

To Emma Foltz and all the unsung heroes who stepped forward in the darkest moments—thank you. Your actions made a difference that will never be forgotten.

Our thoughts remain with the families, loved ones, and communities affected by this tragedy.
