What began as a routine walk turned into an unforgettable rescue mission for two young men in Lanús, Argentina. As they made their way down the street, they noticed something moving slowly out of a ditch. At first, it looked like a strange, dark creature. But as they got closer, they made a heartbreaking discovery—it was a dog, and he was in desperate need of help.
The poor animal was covered head to toe in a thick, black, sticky substance. The smell was strong, and his movements were slow and labored. The young men quickly realized the substance was tar—a material typically used in construction, but extremely harmful to living beings when it comes into contact with the skin.
Without hesitation, they flagged down a police officer, who helped transport the dog to a local animal rescue organization, Zoonosis Lanús. Volunteers at the center were shocked at the dog’s condition. Many said they had never encountered a case quite like this one.
The team immediately began trying to remove the tar. They gave the dog a bath using soap and warm water, but it barely made a difference. The sticky material had hardened and clung to the dog’s fur and skin, making it incredibly difficult to clean.
Myriam Ortellado, who leads the rescue team, explained, “We tried everything—special soaps, care products—but nothing worked. Finally, someone suggested using cooking oil and a spatula.”
It took five long hours of careful, patient work to remove the tar. The dog, whom the volunteers named Petróleo (Spanish for “petroleum”), stayed calm through it all, despite clearly being exhausted. By the end of the cleaning, he had fallen asleep in the bathtub.
But the rescue team’s work wasn’t over. There were concerns that the tar might have caused poisoning or other health issues. Fortunately, Petróleo responded well to treatment, and soon he was resting comfortably and eating again.
Petróleo’s story is one of resilience—and of the incredible kindness of strangers. The two young men who found him, and the volunteers who spent hours saving him, refused to give up. Their compassion made all the difference.
Now, Petróleo is on the road to recovery and searching for a forever home filled with care and love. His story is a powerful reminder of the importance of animal rescue organizations and everyday people who choose to help.
If you ever see an animal in distress, don’t hesitate to report it. Every act of compassion matters—and can save a life.
