Brazil Hot Air Balloon Crash Kills 8 in Mid-Air Fire
A tragic hot air balloon accident in Praia Grande, Santa Catarina, Brazil, claimed eight lives and injured 13 others on June 21, 2025. The balloon, operated by Sobrevoar Serviços Turísticos, was carrying 21 people when a fire broke out mid-flight.
According to police, the pilot began an emergency descent after flames ignited inside the basket. He instructed passengers to jump as the fire intensified. Thirteen people, including the pilot, survived by leaping out. However, the balloon rose rapidly after being lightened, trapping the remaining passengers.
The balloon eventually crashed in a wooded area, leaving behind a scene of devastation. Witnesses described people falling from the sky and thick smoke billowing from the wreckage. Victims included couples, a mother and daughter, and a local figure skater.
The fire’s cause is under investigation. Early reports suggest a backup burner may have reignited. Complicating factors include high winds during takeoff, which may have triggered a gas leak as ground crews struggled to control the balloon.
Emergency responders faced dangerous conditions, including leaking gas and fire risks. Governor Jorginho Mello declared a period of mourning, and President Lula da Silva pledged federal support for the victims’ families.
Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency has launched an investigation. Sobrevoar has suspended operations indefinitely.
This tragedy comes weeks after another fatal balloon crash in São Paulo, sparking national concern over hot air balloon safety. Calls for stricter regulations are growing as the nation mourns.
