\u201cI\u2019m not your biological father,\u201d I said slowly. \u201cBut I love you like you\u2019re my own. Because you are, to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
He was still. Way too still for a nine-year-old. I waited for a reaction\u2014a question, anger, tears.<\/p>\n
Instead, his lip trembled, and he stepped forward, wrapping his arms around my neck. His voice was barely a whisper.<\/p>\n

When Max saw him, he didn\u2019t run into his arms. He didn\u2019t cry. He just stood there and said, \u201cHi. I\u2019m Max.\u201d<\/p>\n
David knelt down and smiled. \u201cI know. You look just like me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t cry then. I waited until later, when Max fell asleep in the hotel room with Murphy curled against his feet.<\/p>\n
A year has passed since then. Max writes to David sometimes. They\u2019re not close\u2014not yet, maybe never. But the mystery is gone. And Max? He\u2019s thriving.<\/p>\n
This morning, I found a drawing taped to the fridge. It\u2019s a stick figure family: Me, Trisha, Ivy, Max, and Murphy. Above it, written in marker: \u201cFamily isn\u2019t who made you. It\u2019s who stays.\u201d<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve still got that \u201cPancake\u201d nickname. And I wear it with more pride than any man has ever worn a title.<\/p>\n
