She couldn\u2019t have been older than nineteen. When I approached and gently asked if she was alright, she looked up with tired, watery eyes and murmured, \u201cI\u2019m just trying to keep her warm.\u201d That\u2019s when I saw the small bundle clutched to her chest\u2014a newborn, barely a week old.<\/p>\n

I called for backup on my radio, but something about her made me stay. She wasn\u2019t under the influence, wasn\u2019t confrontational\u2014just terrified and utterly drained. Her name was Kiara. She\u2019d recently aged out of foster care, given birth alone in a motel, and ended up homeless. The baby\u2019s name was Nia. Child Protective Services had to step in. The shelter had flagged the situation. They needed to assess Kiara\u2019s mental fitness, Nia\u2019s safety, and whether I\u2014as a police officer\u2014was crossing professional boundaries.<\/p>\n

They launched an investigation. Full background checks. Home inspections. Psychological evaluations. I understood it. They had a job to do. But it still felt like she was being taken from me before I even had the chance to truly hold onto her.<\/p>\n

My fellow officers helped however they could. One brought over a crib his kids no longer used. My sergeant\u2019s wife dropped off bags full of supplies\u2014bottles, wipes, formula.<\/p>\n

But the moment it all became real\u2014when the judge looked at me and said, \u201cCongratulations, Mr. Duvall\u201d\u2014I couldn\u2019t hold back the tears.<\/p>\n

I named her Nia Grace Duvall. I kept her first name to honor Kiara, because no matter what, she\u2019s part of her daughter\u2019s story.<\/p>\n

We still see Kiara sometimes. She comes around on Nia\u2019s birthday, brings her a small gift, holds her tight, and tells her she loves her. We don\u2019t use the word \u201cmom\u201d\u2014that\u2019s something Kiara wanted Nia to choose for herself when she\u2019s old enough to understand.<\/p>\n

Nia is four now. She\u2019s full of energy and light. Her laugh is infectious, and her curly hair bounces with every step she takes. She loves pancakes and spinning barefoot in the living room.
