She let out a hollow laugh. \u201cHelp how? With a paycheck that barely covers rent?\u201d<\/p>\n
I swallowed hard. She was right. I couldn\u2019t just give her a job and expect everything to be okay.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can do more,\u201d I said. \u201cI have connections. My cousin manages an apartment complex\u2014they have a unit open. I can help you get in, no deposit needed. And there are programs that can help with food and childcare. I can call people, find out what resources are available.\u201d<\/p>\n
She stared at me. \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause I messed up,\u201d I said. \u201cBecause I was so focused on the rules that I forgot to be human. And because you don\u2019t deserve this. Neither does he.\u201d<\/p>\n
She looked back at her son, then at me. Her shoulders trembled.<\/p>\n
\u201cOkay,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n
The next few weeks were a whirlwind. I kept my promise. My cousin got her into the apartment. My company agreed to increase her pay slightly, and I pulled every string I could to get her access to assistance programs. It wasn\u2019t a perfect solution, but it was a start.<\/p>\n
One afternoon, she walked into my office. \u201cI wanted to say thank you,\u201d she said. \u201cNot just for the job. For seeing me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI should have seen you from the start,\u201d I admitted.<\/p>\n
She smiled, and for the first time, it reached her eyes.<\/p>\n
That night, I sat in my car and thought about how close I had come to making an unforgivable mistake. We get so caught up in policies and procedures that we forget people aren\u2019t just numbers on a spreadsheet. Everyone has a story, and sometimes, all they need is someone to listen.<\/p>\n
If there\u2019s one thing I learned from all this, it\u2019s that kindness shouldn\u2019t come with conditions. And sometimes, breaking the rules is the right thing to do.<\/p>\n
