The designer, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Auguste Bartholdi, proposed building a giant statue there for the inauguration of the Suez Canal called &#8220;Egypt Carrying the Light to Asia,&#8221; but this never came to be. Bartholdi redesigned the plan into the Statue of Liberty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcaps\">on October 28, 1886, the day of its dedication, the Statue of Liberty stood proudly before a crowd of thousands in New York Harbor. From that day until now, the enormous robed woman has lifted her torch to the sky and welcomed outsiders to America.<\/p>\n<p>What else is there to know, really? As any list of Statue of Liberty facts reveals, there&#8217;s quite a lot more to the story actually.<\/p>\n<p>For starters, while many seem to believe that the statue was a gift from France to the U.S. in celebration of their alliance during the American Revolution, it&#8217;s more accurate to say that it was a gift made possible by a single French sculptor, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Auguste Bartholdi, on behalf of his people for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nga.gov\/collection\/artist-info.6761.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reasons that are more complicated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bartholdi, inspired by anti-slavery activist \u00c9douard Ren\u00e9 de Laboulaye, proposed the statue largely as a celebration of Union victory in the Civil War and the end of slavery. Hoping that leaders in his own country would adopt similar ideals of liberty, democracy, and freedom (as opposed to monarchy and empire), Bartholdi proposed the statue as a joint project between the two countries and secured support from enough prominent people on both sides of the Atlantic to eventually make it happen.<\/p>\n<p>But once the plan was a go, the Statue of Liberty&#8217;s journey to completion was a bumpy one. It was almost built on another continent, purchased by two cities other than New York, and violently tossed about at sea before finally arriving in New York.<\/p>\n<p>And when the statue finally got to New York, it was a completely different color than it is now. Originally copper, then brown, and now green, the statue has changed over time due to oxidation.<\/p>\n<p>But though it&#8217;s changed remarkably over the last 130 years, the Statue of Liberty&#8217;s original message has remained consistent. It was on board the French ship\u00a0<em>Isere<\/em>\u00a0and it encountered stormy weather near Portugal, sending it off course.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/allthatsinteresting.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/thomas-edison.png\" alt=\"Thomas Edison\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thomas Edison tried to make it talk. In 1878, he announced plans (that obviously never came to fruition) to make a giant phonograph to place inside the statue. This would have enabled it to give speeches that could be heard throughout New York.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/allthatsinteresting.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/gustave-eiffel.png\" alt=\"Gustave Eiffel\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Gustave Eiffel, the man responsible for designing the Eiffel Tower, helped design the Statue of Liberty. Eiffel worked on the internal structural elements of the statue, with Bartholdi serving as the main designer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/allthatsinteresting.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/50mph-wind-speed.png\" alt=\"Statue Of Liberty Swaying\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If winds reach speeds of 50 mph, the statue can sway up to three inches.
