The nurse came back with an older man in scrubs who looked like he\u2019d been through a hundred sleepless nights. \u201cMiss Velden,\u201d he said, cautious like I might break, \u201cyou\u2019ve been unconscious for three days.\u201d<\/p>\n
That didn\u2019t make sense. I remember\u2026 a grocery store. Or was it a sidewalk? My head pulsed. \u201cWas there\u2026 an accident?\u201d<\/p>\n
He looked at the dog, then back at me. \u201cWe were about to call next of kin. But\u2026 he showed up. Nobody brought him. No one saw him come in. He\u2019s not chipped. Yet somehow, he\u2019s listed under your emergency contacts.\u201d<\/p>\n
I stared at Crover. He blinked, finally. Like he was waiting for me to remember something.<\/p>\n
And suddenly, something flickered.<\/p>\n
I wasn\u2019t alone on that sidewalk.<\/p>\n
I whispered, \u201cDid he pull me out?\u201d<\/p>\n
The doctor hesitated. \u201cThat\u2019s the thing. Witnesses say\u2026 they saw someone dragging you. But they didn\u2019t see a person.\u201d<\/p>\n
Turns out I\u2019d collapsed on the sidewalk outside Stanwick\u2019s Market. Heart arrhythmia, they said. Some weird condition I didn\u2019t even know I had. I\u2019d gone down fast. Hit my head on the curb.<\/p>\n
The last thing I remembered was reaching for a bag of baby spinach.<\/p>\n
But what everyone at the scene agreed on\u2014even though nobody could explain it\u2014was that a golden blur appeared out of nowhere, grabbed my jacket in its teeth, and dragged me clear of the street. One woman swore up and down that the dog waited at the curb, looking both ways like he was checking traffic, before hauling me toward the entrance of the store.<\/p>\n
Crover hadn\u2019t been with me that day. I left him at home because it was warm, and he gets anxious if I leave the window cracked.<\/p>\n
And yet, there he was.<\/p>\n
I got discharged two days later, still weak but stable. When I opened the apartment door, I expected Crover to go curl up like he usually did. Instead, he hovered. Slept beside the couch. Followed me even into the bathroom again, like we were starting all over.<\/p>\n
One night, I sat on the floor and just looked at him.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t know you knew,\u201d I whispered. \u201cAbout my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n
Crover licked my hand and laid his chin on my knee.<\/p>\n
A week later, I got curious. I went to the vet to see if maybe Crover had been chipped and I just forgot, from before I adopted him.<\/p>\n

Because the intake notes say Marlow came from the same neighborhood you lived in before your last move.\u201d<\/p>\n My old neighborhood.<\/p>\n The one where I lost my brother, Callen, in a hit-and-run.<\/p>\n He had a dog when we were kids. A goofy, gold-furred mutt that followed him everywhere. When Callen died, the dog disappeared.
