He stopped himself, his face flushed red. My friend, Nella, shot up from the bed, wide-eyed.

The next few days were a blur. Child protective services got involved. The police came to Nella\u2019s house. I wasn\u2019t allowed to talk to her, and my parents made sure I stayed home.<\/p>\n

At school, the rumors spread like wildfire. Some kids whispered that her dad got arrested. Others said it was a misunderstanding. I didn\u2019t know what to believe anymore.<\/p>\n

About a month later, Nella came back to school. I was nervous to see her. Would she be mad? Blame me?<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t stop the tears. She smiled softly, wiping hers away too.<\/p>\n

She took my hand. \u201cSo are you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, years later, I often think about that night. How easy it would\u2019ve been to say nothing, to convince myself I was overreacting. But sometimes, doing the hard thing\u2014especially when it\u2019s scary\u2014is exactly what\u2019s needed.<\/p>\n

Because of that choice, Nella got a second chance. And so did I. I learned that protecting someone isn\u2019t always about being loud or tough. Sometimes, it\u2019s simply about having the courage to act when your gut tells you something isn\u2019t right.<\/p>\n
