It\u2019s hard to put into words the emotions we experience when we first find out we\u2019re going to be parents. Whether we\u2019re mothers or fathers-to-be, it doesn\u2019t matter \u2013 most of us are simply overjoyed to learn we\u2019re having a child.<\/p>\n
Our initial thoughts are usually filled with hope. We imagine what our little one might look like, or think about all the things we\u2019ll teach them and the experiences we\u2019ll share. Many of us even wonder how it will feel to hold them in our arms for the very first time.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, not all pregnancies lead to the happiness that most of us anticipate. Carlos Morales, from Phoenix, Arizona, knows this painful truth all too well, and his story is a heart-wrenching reminder of life\u2019s unpredictable nature.<\/p>\n
Carlos and Erica Morales were, by all accounts, an ideal couple.<\/p>\n
They began dating in 2006 after meeting at a nightclub in Scottsdale, Arizona. Despite a language barrier \u2013 Carlos didn\u2019t speak English, and Erica didn\u2019t speak Spanish \u2013 there was an undeniable attraction between them.<\/p>\n
Carlos and Erica spent much of that first night dancing together. When the nightclub closed, Carlos wrote down his number on a piece of paper and gave it to Erica, leaving it up to her to decide what to do with it.<\/p>\n
Erica later lost the piece of paper, and that might have been the end of it. But fate had other plans.<\/p>\n
The couple met again through mutual friends, and soon realized their feelings for each other were genuine.<\/p>\n
As a sign of his commitment, Carlos learned English to better communicate with Erica, while Erica took the time to learn Spanish.<\/p>\n
The couple married in Las Vegas in 2007 and began their journey to start a family.<\/p>\n
Sadly, their first attempt ended in tragedy with a miscarriage. However, after undergoing fertility treatments, Erica became pregnant again \u2013 but this time, the couple received a shocking surprise.<\/p>\n
During her first sonogram, the doctors revealed that Erica wasn\u2019t expecting just one baby \u2013 she was carrying quadruplets!<\/p>\n
As the months went by, Carlos and Erica prepared for their new life as parents to four children. Carrying quadruplets put a heavy strain on Erica\u2019s body, and Carlos stepped up to care for her, managing housework, cooking, and cleaning.<\/p>\n
On January 12, 2015, Erica was hospitalized due to high blood pressure. Before Carlos could get to the hospital, Erica texted him, informing him that doctors had decided to deliver the babies immediately because of her ongoing contractions<\/p>\n
When Carlos arrived, he and Erica took photos and videos to capture the moment for later. Before she went into the delivery room, Carlos kissed her on the head and said, \u201cLet\u2019s get these babies out.\u201d<\/p>\n
Little did they know that this day would change their lives in unimaginable ways.<\/p>\n
Carlos and Erica\u2019s quadruplets \u2013 three girls and one boy \u2013 were delivered via C-section.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were so excited to start our family,\u201d Carlos later said. \u201cAnd then, everything came crashing down.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a tragic twist, Erica went into hypovolemic shock shortly after giving birth \u2013 a life-threatening condition caused by severe blood and fluid loss.<\/p>\n
Carlos sat by his wife\u2019s side as alarms sounded and nurses rushed into the room. He was asked to wait outside while doctors worked on Erica. An hour later, a doctor emerged to tell Carlos that Erica had passed away.<\/p>\n
\u201cI couldn\u2019t believe it,\u201d Carlos recalled. \u201cShe was fine, then suddenly she wasn\u2019t. One moment, she was alive, and then, just like that, she was gone. I went from having the best day of my life to the worst day of my life. My four babies were born, and then my wife died.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carlos remembered a conversation he\u2019d had with Erica earlier and named the quadruplets after her and himself: Carlos Jr., Paisley, and Tracey. The third little girl was named \u201cErica,\u201d in honor of her late mother.<\/p>\n
The grieving father brought two of his babies home on January 16, 2015, with the other two following on March 11.<\/p>\n
Despite his profound sense of loss, Carlos knew he had to care for his children. He took baby-care classes, learning how to bathe them, feed them, manage their sleep routines, and even perform CPR.<\/p>\n
Erica\u2019s mother, Sondra Bridges, eventually moved in with Carlos to help him raise her grandchildren.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s funny how life works out,\u201d Sondra said. \u201cBittersweet, but thanks to God and the incredible support we\u2019ve received from the public, it\u2019s been amazing. I want to thank everyone who has supported us \u2013 we truly appreciate it.\u201d<\/p>\n
